Hip hop legends RZA and Raekwon are set to perform their classic album ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’ live, backed by a symphony orchestra, on February 5, 2024. The event, dubbed ‘The Purple Tape Experience’, will take place at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, and will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the album’s release.
‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’ is widely regarded as one of the best hip hop albums of all time, and a seminal work of the mafioso rap subgenre. The album features guest appearances from other members of the Wu-Tang Clan, as well as Nas, and contains hits such as ‘C.R.E.A.M.’, ‘Ice Cream’, and ‘Verbal Intercourse’.
RZA, who produced the entire album, said in a press release: “This is a dream come true for me and Raekwon. We always wanted to perform this album with a live orchestra, and to do it at the Hollywood Bowl is an honor. We hope the fans will enjoy this special experience as much as we do.”
Raekwon, who is the main vocalist on the album, said: “This album is very dear to me and RZA. It represents our friendship, our brotherhood, and our love for hip hop. We are excited to share this moment with the fans, and to bring the Purple Tape to life with a symphony orchestra.”
The event will also feature a special guest DJ set by DJ Premier, and a screening of the documentary ‘The Purple Tape Files’, which chronicles the making of the album. Tickets are available now at the Hollywood Bowl website.
